A history of positive local impact
In 1997, Social Venture Partners was the inspiration of former Aldus Corporation President Paul Brainerd. Along with business leaders Scott Oki, Ida Cole, Bill Neukom and, Doug and Maggie Walker, Brainerd founded a new type of philanthropic organization, calling it Social Venture Partners. Through collaboration they believed they could make a bigger impact. The donors – Partners – would not only contribute financially, but would offer their time and expertise to build long-term partnerships with nonprofit organizations – Investees.
SVPSB's dual mission seeks to catalyze significant, long-term positive social change in their communities through Philanthropy Development and Capacity Building. Our mission, strategic vision and core values guide us in our efforts. Our Partners are engaged in every aspect of the decision making process, which includes our current area of funding, homelessness and low income affordable housing.
Through the many opportunities available, Partners gain a rich insight into community issues, the nonprofit sector, giving strategies, and philanthropic and civic leadership. In addition, Partners develop their knowledge of philanthropy through our Partner Education offerings, which include panels, classes and hands-on experiences.
Since 1997, Social Venture Partners through its twenty five affiliates located throughout the United States, Canada and Japan has been a force of positive social change, harnessing the energy, resources and passion of over 1,900 Partners with contributions of over $26 Million in grant investments to over 300 nonprofit organizations.
The Santa Barbara story
Santa Barbara is a special place. A fascinating mix of beach and mountain, urban and farm, industry and tourism, Santa Barbara has a history of attracting and keeping great people with open minds and spirit. Many look upon Santa Barbara as a “slice of paradise” tucked onto the California coast and, for us who live here, it is. The people are energetic and generous, as reflected in the density of non-profits per capita and foundations. That said, this paradise has its share of challenges and it is here where SVPSB will find opportunities to start and prosper.
The concept of Social Venture Partners fits well into the non-profit environment of Santa Barbara. Many non-profit leaders here identify a need to take their organizations to the next level, expanding and enhancing their capacity to serve, strengthening their management and developing their resources. SVPSB leverages the knowledge and resources of our Partners to serve our Investees.
"The strength-based, collective expertise of the group coupled with business capital has the greatest
potential for expanding and fortifying our hard working non-profits in meeting the growing needs of a diverse community. It’s a sound investment of time, talent and treasure." – SVPSB Partner
