Leon and Elizabeth Olson
Leon Olson graduated from the University of Nebraska school of architecture. After several years of working for others he initiated a design /build construction company focused on residential and multi-family projects. After selling his company in 1977 he moved from Lincoln Nebraska to Santa Barbara and felt he had found his “home” here when a few days after his arrival he experienced his first “Summer Solstice” parade. Quickly determining that such an open and creative venture was a good place to put his energy, he became a part of the Mime Caravan Board and shortly thereafter helped transfer the Summer Solstice event into Summer Solstice Inc., a non-profit company which continues to sponsor the very popular Summer Solstice parade and related events. He served on its board in many roles for 8 years.
His interest and experience in the development and construction of residential properties led him to “Homes for People” where he joined the Board and served as treasure for many years. During his terms as Treasurer of the board, Homes for People helped 63 Santa Barbara families build their home. In 1989 he joined the Board of the Contemporary Arts Forum and served a term as President. He was integral in their Finance Committee and helped to develop and then serve on the Million Dollar Raffle Committee for six very successful years.
Along with his business partners, Leon has developed, owned, and managed several downtown landmark properties including the award winning property where he and Elizabeth live.
Elizabeth Riley Olson -- Received her B.A. in Literature and Fine Arts from the University of Southern California, followed by receiving a Teacher’s Credential, and in 1961 she accepted a teaching job at Ellwood School in Goleta. A few years later teaching was set aside to devote time to raising her two children. Several not-for-profit employment experiences include: Field Representative for American National Red Cross, the Professional Standards Review Organization, the Foundation to Assist California Teachers; and co-ownership of an Art and Design Gallery business in Santa Barbara. Since 1992 she’s been a certified Commissioner of Marriage, writing ceremonies and officiating at the rituals. Elizabeth is part of the founding Committee for the 1998 inception of Santa Barbara’s Empty Bowls benefitting the Foodbank, and both Olsons have been volunteers for all 14 Empty Bowls lunches. Elizabeth and Leon married each other in 1999, and are the very proud grandparents of 7 beautiful grandchildren.
