Naomi Schwartz
Naomi Schwartz was elected to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors in November of 1992, re-elected in March of 1996, and re-elected to her third term in March of 2000, representing the First District, which extends from Carpinteria through the City of Santa Barbara. She retired from County government in January of 2005.
During her tenure she served as the County's representative to the California State Association of Counties, a member of the National Association of Counties' Environment, Energy and Land Use Steering Committee and as Chairperson of the Santa Barbara First 5 (Children and Families) Commission.
She has served in state government as a member, and Chairperson, of the California Coastal Commission, and from 1982 to 1992 as Chief of Staff to State Senator Gary K. Hart.
She was a founding member of the Santa Barbara community organizations Coastwatch, the Fund for Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Women's Political Committee.
The Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the County Social Workers' Association , the Commission on Women, the 15th District P.T.A., the League of Women Voters and the Citizens Planning Association have all honored Naomi for her public service. She has been named by the Tres Condados Girl Scout Council as a Woman of Distinction, and honored by the League for Coastal Protection for her long-standing and unwavering commitment to coastal protection. She was the recipient of the UCSB Environmental Studies Program's 2004 Community Service Award.
She presently serves on the Dean's Council of the Bren School of Environmental Management at UCSB, the Board of the Courthouse Legacy Foundation , and is Executive Director of the Gildea Foundation .
Naomi received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College, New York, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Santa Barbara College of Law. She is a former elementary school teacher and social psychology researcher.
Naomi has four children and three grandchildren, and has been a Santa Barbara resident since 1967.
